Description
United States Centennial
Washington, D.C., December 16, 1874
Rare 1874 Centennial Tea Party Ticket
Ticket/Invitation
A ticket to attend the Centennial Tea Party held in the Rotunda of the Capitol, advertising an admission fee of one dollar. 1p, measuring 3.25" x 4.6125", Washington, D.C., dated December 16, 1874. Printed by Breuker & Kessler Lithographers of Philadelphia. Exhibits darkened edge toning, with scattered soiling present throughout; evidence of prior mounting verso. Overall, very good- a nice example of post-Civil War ephemera.
The Centennial Tea Party of 1874 was organized by the Women?s Centennial Executive Committee, who were inspired by the events of the Boston Tea Party one hundred and one years earlier. The party would act as a fundraiser for the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first World's Fair to be held by the United States. Ladies' Committees such as this were originally popularized during the Civil War as a way to raise money for wounded soldiers and military hospitals, later turning their attention to patriotic events and the promotion of social reforms in post-war America.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
