A signed first day cover by Sergeant Alvin York. Measuring 6.5" x 3.625", postmarked Washington, D.C., dated February 12, 1943. A "Four Freedoms" first day cover with four "Four Freedoms" 1-cent stamps. Signed "Sgt Alvin C. York." The cover has light soiling and toning throughout. Boldly signed.

The cover was issued to "emphasize the necessity of world-wide freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear." A newspaper clipping photograph of York has been pasted to the left of York's signature.

Alvin Cullum York (1887-1964) was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War I and is considered one of the U.S. Army's most decorated soldiers; he received a Medal of Honor during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France as well as numerous decorations from several allied countries including France, Italy, and Montenegro. In 1941, a movie about his war exploits was produced entitled "Sergeant York" and became the year's highest-grossing film.
