A short letter from Robert Louis Stevenson, requesting several books from a bookseller. 2pp (front and back), measuring 4" x 6.25", Wensleydale, Bournemouth, n.d. [ca. October 1884]. Stevenson only resided in the Wensleydale boarding house for a few months in late 1884, which is how we are able to date this letter. Signed "Robert Louis Stevenson" and addressed to Mr. Walter Scott, a bookseller. Stevenson requests a group of four books be sent to him, including "Wellington's Despatches", "Sidney Castle", "The Delicate Distress or the Gordian Knot", and "Colquhoun on the Police". Written on Stevenson's French personal stationery. The letter has a flattened mail fold, with light toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed. Overall very good.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. Stevenson and his wife had moved to Bournemouth in the hopes that the sea air would benefit Stevenson's ailing health, and ultimately settled in a house named "Skerryvore". Despite his poor health, during his three years in Westbourne, Stevenson wrote the bulk of his most popular work: "Treasure Island", "Kidnapped", "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and "A Child's Garden of Verses and Underwoods." Perhaps the books he requested were for personal reading, or maybe they would serve as inspiration for his famous novels to come.
