A first American edition of The X Ray or Photography of the Invisible by Dr. William J. Morton, M.D., in collaboration with Edwin W. Hammer, electrical engineer (New York: American Technical Book Co, 1896). 196 pp, plus an additional 33 pages dedicated to Hammer's photographic plates, no. 54 through 91. Green cloth covers, with decorative silver design and lettering. Bumped corners and light wear to cover, not affecting silver detailing. Slight tearing to binding on inside of front cover, slightly offsetting alignment. Pages exhibit minor toning but are otherwise clean and tightly bound. Overall, very good. 5.25" x 7.5".

William James Morton, M.D. (1845-1920) was an American physician and pioneer of electrotherapeutics, or the use of electricity to cure disease. He was the son of William T. G. Morton (1819-1888), a prominent dentist and physician who is credited with the first demonstration of inhaling ether for the use of surgical anesthesia. Likely inspired by the career of his father, the younger Morton was admitted into the Harvard School of Medicine, and was later awarded for his thesis on anesthetics. After working abroad as a teacher, Morton returned to the States where he developed an apparatus known as the "Morton current", which supplied a means for producing x rays. He published his findings in 1896, just nine months after physicist Wilhelm R?ntgen (1845-1923) made his discovery public, marking the first textbook on to be published on the subject in the United States.

Edwin W. Hammer (1868-1951) was a consulting engineer and early associate of Thomas A. Edison. Hammer worked as Edison's assistant during both the Paris and Minneapolis expositions, and served as an engineer for the Edition Electric Light Company's legal department. He later worked as a patent consultant, advising such corporations as General Motors, General Electric, and Westinghouse.
