French Three-Bird Singing Automaton with Dome, Attributed to Blaise Bontemps (1814-1893)
late 19th century
the automaton with three birds, one drinking from running water represented by a spinning spiral glass rod and two perched in the tree, birds are animated through a spring-driven brass movement contained in the ebonized wood base, the porcelain dial with open moon hands and Roman hour numerals, additionally contains a separate cylinder music box with pull string wind
23 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 9 inches
Condition
Good overall condition. The music box functions properly. The automaton mechanism has power but functions sluggishly and will need to be serviced partially due to a loose belt. The dome is period but there is additional space on the outside.
