Description
An exceedingly rare old ceremonial mask from the Amazon Jungle, made of carved wood and painted designs using Urucu or natural pigments. There are today only 170 Waurá live in several small villages in the Indian reservation of Xingu Indian Park in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Waurá were not contacted by Whites until the late nineteenth century and remain largely unacculturated. This old example is one of only a few that have come to auction in the last several years. The mask measures 10 x 8 inches , 21 inches tall if adding what hanging grass remains. A display stand is not included.Ex collection Andy Peter Antippas, New Orleans, LA.
