Saint Anne, also known as Saint Anne the Prophetess, is the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus Christ. She is considered a saint in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion.There is no historical evidence for the existence of Saint Anne, but she is mentioned in the apocryphal gospels, such as the Protoevangelium of James and the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew. These gospels tell the story of Anne's marriage to Joachim, a wealthy carpenter, and their conception of Mary.According to these gospels, Anne was a devout woman who prayed for many years to have a child. One day, an angel appeared to her and told her that she would conceive a daughter who would be the mother of the Messiah. Anne was overjoyed and she and Joachim celebrated with a feast.
Mary was born a few months later and she was raised in a devout household. She was educated in the Jewish faith and she learned to read and write. She was also taught to pray and to meditate.

When Mary was 12 years old, she was betrothed to Joseph, a carpenter. Joseph was a widower and he had several children from his previous marriage. Mary and Joseph lived together in Nazareth and they raised Jesus as their own son.

Saint Anne is often depicted in art as an elderly woman with a long white beard. She is usually shown holding Mary on her lap or she is shown standing next to Mary and Jesus. Saint Anne is often invoked as a patron saint of mothers, grandmothers, and women who are trying to conceive.
