Charles Bierstadt was an American photographer who is best known for his landscape photography of the American West during the late 19th century. He was born in Germany in 1819 and immigrated to the United States in the 1850s.

One of Bierstadt's notable works is the stereoview of the Maid of the Mist, a popular tourist attraction in Niagara Falls, New York. The Maid of the Mist is a boat tour that takes visitors to the base of the Niagara Falls. Bierstadt captured the boat and its passengers in his stereoview, which was produced using a special camera that takes two photographs simultaneously from slightly different angles. When viewed through a stereoscope, the two images combine to create a three-dimensional effect.

Bierstadt's stereoview of the Maid of the Mist is considered a valuable historical artifact and a significant example of 19th-century photography. It provides a glimpse into the tourism industry of the time and the popularity of Niagara Falls as a destination.
