Before restoration, there were two tape lifts on the right-hand side of the image and a small hole near Freddy's thumb. All have been professionally repaired.

Unleashed on audiences at a time when more formulaic outings from Michael Myers to Jason Voorhees dominated horror movies in the U.S., Wes Craven introduced the world to Freddy Krueger in 1984 with A Nightmare on Elm Street. This fantasy-laced slasher movie would help alter the course of horror cinema. The film's massive commercial success saves New Line Cinema from financial ruin. The series' entries would continue to be some of the company's highest earners throughout the 1980s.
