Description
THE QUIET MAN
Six Sheet (81" x 81" )
Very Fine- on Linen
Republic, 1952
This magnificent large format would grace an entertainment center wall with one of the most famous images in film: Wayne pulling Maureen O'Hara to him.
This poster has had mostly minor restoration with some fold wear touch-ups and airbrushing in the yellow credits section, but otherwise, the images of this poster are spotless and bright.
When one thinks of John Wayne, one typically recalls his Westerns or war pictures. But somewhat surprisingly, his most beloved picture was neither. It was, in fact, this film, a romantic comedy-drama directed by longtime Wayne collaborator John Ford and set in Ireland, in which Wayne plays Sean Thornton, a retired boxer who returns to his homeland to buy the family farm and settle down. This was a significant departure for Wayne, Ford, and Republic Studios, as the studio had been known for its solid B-Western line. With an all-star cast, this lavish production was the only film from Republic to be shot in Technicolor and the only release from that studio to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on April 19th.
