Description
This coiffure or hair-setting comb comes from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection, where it was among his renowned collection of Lincoln memorabilia. His display card, with this piece, refers to “TORTOISE SHELL COMBS FOR HER COIFFURE,” indicating this was likely with the two dark brown and tan combs sold in the November 2008 sale of some of his Lincoln material. Those combs were noted as listed in the Kunhardt inventory and likely descended through Mary Edwards Brown, great-niece of Mary Todd Lincoln. This comb is in the form of a walking bird, 3 x 6", bone, with brown detailing, missing just two or three teeth. After his death, Dr. Lattimer’s collections were in some disarray, with pieces purchased or displayed together, and their supporting documentation, sometimes separated. Many of these are only now surfacing. CONDITION: Good.
