Description
The South Overman Mining Company, incorporated Mar 19, 1864; located in the Gold Hill mining district, Nevada Territory. Certificate no. 111 issued to Wilson Dunlap for 5 shares on Apr 15, 1868. Signed by S. W. Chubbuck as president and N. S. Phila(?) as secretary. Signed by W. Dunlap and H.H. Hagg in the back, not cancelled. Center top vignette of an eagle, with the slogan " E Pluribus Unum", a 20 and a 5 cent IR adhesive stamp attached on the left bottom. Territorial printed by Gold Hill News Print. This mining company was incorporated pre-Nevada statehood, and located on the Comstock Ledge, one of the first mining companies to work the lode in 1860. Mining operations were difficult due to many floods in the coming decades, the Overman Shaft was used to reach the lowest depths of the Comstock lode and which turned into a open pit mine in 1940s.
