Description
Desert Landscape, oil on canvasboard, 16 x 20, signed lower left: Mary Darter Coleman, Fort Worth native Coleman (née Darter) graduated from Texas Christian University, before moving to New York City to pursue an art career. At the Art Students League, Coleman she studied under renowned artist and instructor, F. Luis Mora (Uruguayan-American, 1874–1940), as well as expert figural artist, George Bridgman (Canadian-American, 1865-1943). After her New York period, Coleman moved back to Texas, where she taught art at Midland College and her alma mater, TCU. In 1925, Coleman relocated permanently to Los Angeles, where she became a member of the Los Angeles Art Association and the California Art Club, and continued her studies with Edgar Alwin Payne (American, 1883-1947). The blocky, thick brushstrokes of Coleman’s Landscape suggest this is a work executed during her California period, after exposure to the blocky brushwork of Payne’s landscapes.
