Description
By the Lake, oil on canvasboard, 9 x 12, signed lower left: UW Fisher, By the Lake is highly characteristic of Fisher’s work, known to depict landscapes and seascapes. His spontaneous brushstrokes give way to texture reminiscent of impressionist paintings, to which he was likely exposed. Before moving to Buenos Aires in 1920, Fisher studied painting in Berlin. In his two years in Argentina, Fisher’s work was accepted to show in the National Art Exhibition, and he was awarded the gold medal of the National Society of Decorative Arts. He relocated to New York City in 1922, working in tapestry design, then moved to Florida in 1937 to teach painting across the state, and finally to California, a period during which he painted mostly lush seascapes. Fisher moved to Texas in 1960, working in both Houston and McAllen. He spent his final years in Corpus Christi, which provided him with views of both the Texas landscape and coastal scenes.
