Description
Landscape, oil on canvas, 14 x 15, signed lower left: C Harvi Altheide, Altheide, a World War I veteran, was a Missouri native who became a Texan at heart. He relocated to San Antonio in the early twentieth century, and regularly exhibited work throughout the following two decades. Altheide was featured in such notable exhibitions as the San Antonio Art League (1926), the San Antonio Artists Guild (1927), the Edgar B. Davis Competition (1928), and the San Antonio Local Artists Annual Exhibition (1930-37). Altheide’s quick, textural brushstrokes suggest painting en plein air, or painting outdoors, a technique favored by the Impressionists; given the size of this untitled canvas, it is likely the artist painted on-site.
