Landscape, Medina, TX, oil on canvas, 20 x 16, signed lower left: J Carrington, Carrington, a San Antonio artist, received extensive formal artistic training and exhibited nationally throughout her career. She attended the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Students League of New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago. This landscape likely depicts the artist’s family ranch, or land near the property, which was near Medina, Texas. Carrington preferred to paint from life, as opposed to working from sketches or only using her imagination, insisting on direct observation to guide the language of the composition. Carrington’s portrait of Clara Driscoll, the “Savior of the Alamo,” hangs in the Boardroom of the Alamo, and her watercolor of the Great Seal of Texas hangs in the office of the Texas Secretary of State. Carrington exhibited work at the San Antonio Local Artists Annual Exhibition in 1935 through 1937, and in 1959, among participation in countless exhibitions.
