Description
Big Sky and Pasture, 1937, oil on canvas, 16 x 20, signed lower left: G Browning 37, Big Sky and Pasture is characteristic of Browning’s body of work, which demonstrates a lifelong fascination with Native American life, and landscapes of the Southwest. A Mississippi native, Browning moved to Brownwood, Texas, as a child. His artistic training included studying under Harry Anthony DeYoung (American, 1893-1956) and Adele Laure Brunet (American, 1871-1963), and attending the art school of the Brooklyn Museum in New York. After his studies, Browning returned to Brownwood, where he was a private art instructor to support his painting. During World War II, he was stationed with the Unites States Army in the South Pacific for four years. Post-war, Browning lived in New Mexico and Texas, continuing to teach privately and in the art department at Daniel Baker College. His work was exhibited throughout Texas, especially in exhibitions of the Fort Worth Art Association.
