Description
Redbuds in Bloom, oil on canvas, 20 x 24, signed lower right: L. W. Rice, Rice was a well-traveled portraitist who lived and worked in Austin for most of her life. Her body of work also includes landscapes, seascapes, and genre scenes, produced especially during her later years. Rice graduated from Baylor Female College in 1891 with an art degree, and moved to Austin in 1900. She traveled overseas with a group of artists in 1927, visiting France, Italy, Corsica, and North Africa. While in Paris, Rice studied at the Académies Colarossi, Delecluse, and de la Grande Chaumiere, and briefly opened a studio in the city. Upon returning to the United States, Rice attended the Art Students League in New York, after which she settled back in Austin and opened a studio and gallery. Rice completed a number of commissions to paint portraits of public figures, such as Texas governors and college presidents. She exhibited work throughout her accomplished career, including the 1928 Paris Salon, the Annual Texas Artist Circuit Exhibition (1929-30), the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs (1930), and the Annual Texas Artist Exhibition in Fort Worth (1931-32, 1934-35). Impressively, Rice painted through the early 1950s, stopping only as a result of difficulty with her vision.
