Spring Bloom, oil on canvas, 20 x 24, signed lower right: ID Shepler, Ira D. Shepler was a San Antonio artist and early Texas landscape painter. He was born in western Virginia, and moved to San Antonio in 1919. Shepler exhibited work in the San Antonio Local Artists Annual Exhibition throughout the 1930s. Like contemporaneous south Texas landscapists, Shepler was motivated by the natural elements of his surroundings, and sought to capture his observations of the Hill Country in all of its hypnotizing viewpoints. His work is characterized by feathery brushwork, a subdued color palette, and evenly distributed light throughout the composition, creating an overall vibrancy. Painting in San Antonio in the 1930s, Shepler likely exhibited alongside renowned San Antonio artists and fellow landscapists Peter Hohnstedt (American, 1872-1957) and José Arpa (Spanish-American, 1858–1952).
