Description
Thedford, Ontario. 1870s-1880s. Salt-glazed stoneware. Alexander Beattie opened his first general store in St. Marys, Ontario in the early 1860s, which was the starting point for a prosperous business career. By the late 1860s, he had taken on a partner named Robert Dickson and in the 1870s the pair opened two new locations in Stratford and Thedford where they offered a full line of groceries as well as a variety of wines and liquors. A fourth location came in the 1880s, and although Beattie died in 1888 the stores carried on under his name for many years afterwards. Stamped, "From / A, Beattie & Co / Dealers In Groceries / Wines & Liquors / Thedford. Ont". 7.25" x 4.5" Dia. From the Late Mike O'Hara Collection.
