Item Details
Description
Newton, Harold (1934-1994) Florida Highwaymen Painting. Oil on Transitional Masonite - signed lower right. Technicolor splendidly iconic image of the old river road at Fort Pierce Inlet. Contains all of the quintessential Harold points. Classic Backus sailboat framed between the palms which he borrowed from a Backus Masterpiece. A masterful array of cumulus clouds, which heal so borrowed from Backus, who studied weather and was an avid sailor. Emblematic lower right hibiscus flowers shared only with his brother Sam. (ref: "Brothers in Art" Sam River road) A broad array of color in the river surf and a close up sailboat make this example better than the recently realized $18,000 example. An essential centerpiece for the most sophisticated collections. This signature scene that lends the name "Highwaymen" to 26 artists who paved the road to Indian River School of Art fame. Profuse palette knife emblazoned upon a supple brush field. Board measures 24x40 framed to overall size of 29x45. African American Highwaymen Folk Art, evolved from the Backus Indian River School Art Colony. Condition: Very Fine
