Description
Goblet in honour of the Prince of Orange-Nassau, Amsterdam, Daniel Henriques de Casto, m. 19th century. Faceted baluster shaft with four pierced air bubbles. On the cuppa, decoration in diamond dots circumferential: the coat of arms of Holland on the front, with an unrecognizable inscription underneath. Inscription on the reverse, partly made unrecognizable: ''Aan z. K. H. dem Prins van ...''. Underneath rich floral decor. Shelfmark: ''met Diamant gegr. door D.H. de Castro''. H. 22 cm In 1860, the Rotterdam glass engraver Daniel Henriques de Castro donated some engraved glasses to King Willem III and his wife Queen Sophie. The glass he gave to the queen later found its way into the collection of the Jewish Historical Museum. Our glass is probably the glass that was dedicated to Prince Willem (1840-1879) or his brother Maurits (1843-1850), who died very young.
