Description
A contemporary modern screenprint on paper titled "Globe" by American artist Donald Baechler. Hand signed, dated 2001, and annotated 42/60 on the bottom left. Although Baechler's "Globe" does not employ actual found objects as some of his paintings do, it does juxtapose unrelated images in a collage-like motif that is cohesive even as it is fragmented. If we look beyond the huge blue and green globe that seems to float towards us - an illusion the artist creates by keeping his background in muted shades that recede - Baechler's sense of humor and masterful compositional skills emerge. The eye travels easily from bit of information to the next: A whimsical sun in the upper left mimics the circular globe and even looks a bit surprised as its oversized twin. The spherical motif is reiterated in subtle ways: the circle at the center of the star on the upper right, the center of the flower on the bottom, the black-dotted strips that seem to be cut from sheets of press-on-type. Other snippets of life on Planet Earth also come into play: There is a diagram of small houses and a trainman signaling an on-coming locomotive - both shown deliberately sideways, so we first note the formal quality of these patches, the color and shapes they bring to the overall composition; and only later decipher the little drawings. Nothing in Baechler's pastiche is by change. The ellipse swirling above and below the globe, recycled patterns and images colliding in every direction, bold and muted colors - together they create what Baechler calls an "Illusion of History." And too, the sensation that Planet Earth is moving in a littered atmosphere of our own making. Baechler's (1956- ) artworks are collected by numerous museums around the world, among them the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum in New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. From a private collection. Dimensions: 60"h x 48.5"w x 1"d (framed). In excellent condition.
