Near East / Central Asia, Turkey / Northwestern Iran, Marlik or Cheragh-Ali Teppe region, Amlash / Amardi culture, Iron Age period, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. An impressive example of a redware pottery pitcher exhibiting a trio of tab-shaped feet surmounted by a spherical body. A curved handle arches off the verso while a slender spout rises from one side of the shoulder. The stone-burnished surfaces feature faint linear motifs as well as a pleasing luster about them that makes the vermilion and russet hues of the vessel stand out. Amlash vessels were buried in large megalithic tombs, built by part of the Marlik culture. Despite its proximity to the large Mesopotamian cultures, the geographical barrier of the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains kept it relatively isolated and a very unique ceramic tradition developed there.
