Southeast Asia, Philippines, Northern Luzon Island, Ifugao, ca. 19th century CE. A rare example of a hand-carved wooden headhunter helmet of domed form that depicts a stylized anthropomorphic countenance. The wide, ovoid eyes, slender nose, pursed lips, and sweeping brows comprise the expressive visage, and layers of light- and dark-brown pigment covers the surfaces. A pair of suspension holes along the lower periphery enabled the helmet to be secured to the wearer with a chinstrap.
