Item Details
Description
Northern Europe, England, ca. 20th century CE. An impressive chess set in the theme of the American War of Independence made in England by Mascott Direct. Specially commissioned from the English artist George Pitman-Hooker, this large-scale theme chess set depicts some of the most influential characters in the birth of the nation. Each heavy-weighted piece is hand-painted and created from crushed marble and resin with a felted underlay. Note the extensive research and detail incorporated into each piece with many figures based off of historical portraits found in American and British museums. On the American side, the king is General George Washington, the Queen is Betsy Ross, the bishops are Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, the knights are Lafayette and Benedict Arnold, the castles are Independence Hall of Philadelphia, and the pawns are a Private in the Third New Jersey Regiment also known as the "Jersey Blues." Size of largest (Washington): 2.5" W x 6.8" H (6.4 cm x 17.3 cm)

Alternatively, the British pieces consist of King George III as king, Queen Charlotte as queen, Frederick Lord North and General Sir William Howe as bishops, General Charles, Earl Cornwallis and Benedict Arnold as knights, the Tower of London as the castle, and Privates in the Grenadier Company of the Coldstream Guards as pawns.

Please note that the chess board is not included with this set.
