Description
Poseidon, the Greek deity, controller of ocean and seas, is found at the lip of the jug, his crown adorned with a wreath of laurel and berries. He blows the water of his domain in a spiraling fury around the jug. Detailed marks of rushing water, goes around the entirety of the jug, claiming the lives of a shipwreck. Two women and a boy-child are seen struggling against the peril of the suffocating, foaming waves. A nude fisherman is in place of a handle; his legs being entwined by the fishtails of mermaids, who in their attempts of rescue, are notorious for sending their victims to watery-graves by unknowingly trying to take them to their underwater kingdoms. The man stares out, yielding the gusts of winds with his hand to see where others are, only to vaguely hear the coming and going of lost screams for help, on the winds of the roaring tempest. This exquisite bronze sculpture, rich in ancient Greek folklore, was cast using the ancient method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina tarnish. It is mounted upon a black marble base with the European Bronze Finery stamp of quality and the artist Moreau's signature. Gustave Moreau (6 April 1826 – 18 April 1898) was a French Symbolist painter whose main emphasis was the illustration of biblical and mythological figures. As a painter of literary ideas, Moreau appealed to the imaginations of some Symbolist writers and artists.
