Description
A London-decorated Paris coffee can from the 'Baltic Service', circa 1802
Of cylindrical shape, with a border of oak leaves and gilded acorns above a victor's laurel wreath enclosing a fouled anchor and gilt inscription 'Nelson 2nd April Baltic' flanked by further gilt lettering 'Glorious 1st Augt' and 'San Josef', gold line rims, 6.2cm high
Footnotes:
This can probably comes from the portion of the Baltic Set that passed from William, 1st Earl Nelson to his second wife, Hilare Barlow, Dowager Countess Nelson, Duchess of Bronte.
A similar can, lot 64 in this sale, came from the Charles Wentworth Wass Collection and was acquired from Viscount Bridport's sale in 1895. A matching teacup and saucer from the Baltic Service is in the Nelson Gallery at Portsmouth Dockyard, no.197/364. Another, in the National Maritime Museum, no.AAA4591/2 came from the Nelson-Ward Collection and may have belonged to Nelson's daughter Horatia.
