Richard Hefter (1941-2011) was an American author of books for young children, illustrator, publisher and graphic designer. He is known as the creator of Stickybear and as the co-creator (with Reinach) and illustrator for the Sweet Pickles library of books, and for the Strawberry Library of First Learning.
Richard Hefter met children's author Jacquelyn Reinach in 1975. He was contracted at the time to write 26 books for the publishers Holt. Explaining the enormous success of Sweet Pickles, Hefter stated that the phenomenon began with the notion of "a peer group with no authority figures...'There'd be no parents, no family, just alphabetic characters equally divided between male and female," he said. "Because Jackie [Reinach] was a psychologist by training, each character was given a specific personality trait."
After the contract with Holt expired, Hefter formed a publishing venture, Euphrosyne, with Reinach. In 1982, Hefter formed a computer software company, Optimum Resource.
Richard Hefter has won awards for graphic and type design and his paintings are in the collections of major museums.
