Item Details
Description
A pseudo-Chalcidian bronze helmet, northern Black Sea area, 3rd - 2nd century B.C.Sarmatian helmet made of chased bronze sheet with decorative elements inspired by Chalcidian helmets. The calotte is made in two parts. Along its length, joined along the overlapping edges with 15 rivets. The lower edge of the calotte flanged outwards in an approx. 3 mm wide bead. Approx. 3.5 cm above the rim bead at the back and laterally a second bead running parallel to the rim bead driven out in the wall from the inside. This bends upwards above the forehead at an angle of about 45 degrees, forming a "gable" similar to that of Chalcidian helmets. From the top of the gable, the beads run along the overlapping edges longitudinally across the crown and meet the bead in the wall at right angles on the back of the head. On the inside of the rim laterally on the left and right two bent sheet metal bands, each fastened with two rivets, the lower end of which forms the central socket of a hinge for attaching movable cheek guards. The cheek guards are not preserved. Two additional holes in front of and behind the rivet holes for the bushings, probably for attaching a helmet liner. Inside the helmet, organic remains partially preserved in the oxide, which probably represent the remains of such a helmet lining. On the left side, cracks stabilised by restoration from the inside in the lower part of the wall to slightly above the bead in the wall. Two smaller holes in the calotte closed on both sides (approx. 1 x 2 cm). Otherwise largely completely preserved original substance (over 95 %). Beautiful green, slightly spotty, partially shiny patina. Length at the lower edge 20 cm, width 18.3 cm. Height approx. 17 cm.Provenance: From the Swiss collection G. B., kept in Southwest Germany, acquired from Spanish possession (Spanish export papers available).Condition: II
