Description
A Transylvanian silver hetman's mace (pusikan), circa 1600The mace finely wrought in gilt silver, delicately engraved and chased. The circular head with eight gentle flanges, a blossom-shaped crown plate on the top. The multi-tiered shaft with fine relief decoration, a metal weave tassel still attached. The surface entirely covered with turquoise cabochons (a few small stones have been lost). Length 53 cm.Originally from the Ottoman Empire, these fabulous maces were carried by military leaders as ceremonial insignia, with similar shaped maces also being used in Poland and Russia. A Transylvanian mace, also set with turquoises, can be found in the Türckische Cammer (Turkish Chamber) of the armoury in Dresden.Condition: II +
