Mourning me – but not one of 'em but wished me DEAD!" It's tepid stuff, typical of many pre-Code publishers' anemic cover images in the final days before the Comics Code clampdown. Distributors and wholesalers knew the writing was on the wall for horror comics, and as the Code loomed, anything too outré might get returned to the publisher, uncirculated. It's tempting to think cover artist Myron Fass's dig at hypocrites was aimed at the distributors who were happy to ride the pre-Code horror gravy train when business was booming, but grew squeamish and censorious when the heat was on.______________________________________________________________
