Vassili Dmitrievich Polenov, Russian (1844 - 1927), oil on canvas, early 20th century. Study for the Gospel cycle “From the Life of Christ”. Polenov considered the creation of a cycle of paintings about Christ “the main work of his life.” The series was published in the form of black and white reproductions in the album “From the Life of Christ” published by Polenov himself, which became a bibliographic rarity immediately after publication. Three years later, an album with color reproductions was published in Prague. The series included 65 works by 1909, but only a small number of paintings have survived in Russian museums and private collections. For a long time there was an opinion that the bulk of the artist’s works were sold during Soviet times in the USA and their whereabouts are currently unknown. Size 60x50 cm.
