Item Details
Description
Weegee, born Arthur Fellig (1899–1968), was a Ukrainian-American photographer and photojournalist best known for his gritty and candid images of New York City street life in the 1930s and 1940s. He earned the nickname "Weegee" from his ability to arrive at crime scenes and accidents before the police, seemingly as if he had a sixth sense.Weegee's photographs captured the raw and unfiltered realities of urban life, particularly in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He documented crime scenes, fires, accidents, and other sensational events with a keen eye for detail and a sense of drama, often using a Speed Graphic camera and flash to capture his subjects in harsh, dramatic lighting. One of Weegee's most famous images is "The Critic" (1943), which depicts a group of well-dressed theatergoers viewing a painting at the Museum of Modern Art while a man in the foreground stares intently at them, creating a striking juxtaposition of high culture and lowbrow voyeurism. In addition to his work as a photojournalist, Weegee also published several books of his photographs, including "Naked City" (1945), which featured his iconic images of New York City street scenes. He also experimented with filmmaking and wrote a series of autobiographical essays.Weegee's work had a significant influence on the development of street photography and photojournalism, and he is celebrated for his ability to capture the energy and atmosphere of New York City during a tumultuous period in its history. His photographs continue to be admired for their raw emotion, dramatic composition, and unflinching honesty, and his legacy as one of the great documentary photographers of the 20th century endures to this day.
