Description
Alfred Stieglitz (1864 – 1946) was an American photographer, art promoter, and gallery owner who played a pivotal role in shaping the course of modern art in the United States. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Stieglitz began his photographic career in the late 19th century and quickly gained recognition for his innovative approach to the medium.Stieglitz was a champion of photography as a legitimate art form, advocating for its recognition alongside painting and sculpture. He founded the Photo-Secession movement in 1902, which aimed to elevate photography to the status of fine art and promoted the work of pioneering photographers such as Edward Steichen, Clarence White, and Gertrude Käsebier. In addition to his advocacy for photography, Stieglitz was a prolific photographer in his own right, known for his pioneering use of the medium to explore themes of urban life, nature, and the human condition. His series of photographs of New York City, including iconic images of skyscrapers and city streets, are celebrated for their technical mastery and emotional depth.Stieglitz also played a crucial role in introducing European modernist art to American audiences. He founded the avant-garde gallery "291" in New York City, where he exhibited the work of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georgia O'Keeffe, whom he later married.Throughout his life, Stieglitz remained a tireless advocate for artistic innovation and expression. His work and his efforts to promote photography as a legitimate art form helped pave the way for future generations of photographers and artists, leaving an indelible mark on the history of modern art.
