In his book Marine Art & Liverpool Sam Davidson notes the following about Henry Melling; 'Although his compositions were by no means confined to marine topics, mention must be made of this artist who was passionately fond of sailing and played a large part in the founding of the Royal Mersey Yacht Club in 1844. His contribution may be judged by the fact that he served as Honorary Secretary from its inception until the year of his death.'
