Description
Dutch Monogrammed Needlework Sampler, probably the Netherlands, c. 1800. Plain-woven linen ground cross-stitched with colorful silk threads, featuring a central wreath held by cupids and encircling the initials 'CvdG', flanked by complementary scenes depicting Caleb and Joshua at left, Adam and Eve at right, the middle register filled with tulip and rosette motifs, and the bottom corners embroidered with the initials 'HvdC' in a heart at left, and 'ES' below a crown at right, all framed by rectangular grapevine border, (sight) 18 x 14 5/8 in., (frame) 17 3/4 x 21 1/4 in.
