Description
RICHARD GALE (1896-1982) British general, served with distinction during the World War I, then with the 1st Parachute Brigade and then the 6th Airborne Division during the D-Day landings and Operation Tonga in 1944. Gale was the first British general to land on French soil on D-Day, at 0330 hours. A.L.S. on Army & Navy Club letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., London, Apr. 19, 1949 to DENNIS WHEATLEY (1897-1977), a British writer whose prolific output of thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling authors from the 1930s through to the 1960s. During the Second World War Wheatley was a member of the London Controlling Section, which secretly coordinated strategic military deception and cover plans, and was involved in OVERLORD planning. Gale regrets that their schedules don't agree: '...you have your own commitments as I have mine!' and mentions his new appointment, presumably as Director-General of Military Training: '...quite a lot of travel & outdoor work & contact with the troops...I am down in Southern Command...' Light stain in a blank area, else fine.
