Oil on canvas; framed; young woman holding curl of hair; from "Ingleside" Wytheville, Va.; religned; 30" x 25"; G-G+ *Colonel Robert Enoch Withers (Civil War), U.S. Senator, Ambassador to Hong Kong. Portrait hung in the house Col. Wither resided called "Ingleside" (house is still there with historical marker placed by the state of Virginia. "Ingleside" was owned by members of the Withers family until 1986. Portraits are members of the Withers family. Colonel Wither's son, Robert Edwin Withers, was a founder of the aluminum company Alcoa and also resided at "Ingleside" in his later years. He was the youngest of 12 children and the only boy. Col. Withers traveled to Hong Kong with his wife and 12 children to serve as the U.S. Ambassador there. Many of his possessions at "Ingleside" were from his travels to Hong Kong.
