(1883 - 1946) ‘Vinegar Joe’, American Army general who commanded all American forces in the China-Burma-India theater in World War II; a brilliant tactician and combat leader. A fantastic grouping of twenty-two rarely seen 11 x 8.5 in. b/w modern prints of photographs taken by Gen. Stilwell’s personal photographer DAVID QUAID, depicting Stilwell and his men during their assignment to the China-Burma-India Theater. Per our consignor these images come directly from Quaid’s estate. Images include: a candid shot of Stilwell and a few of his men taking a respite; several images of Merrill’s Marauders crossing a river with their weapons in hand, with one such image bearing a description in part: ‘...Men of Merrill’s marauders, cross the Tanai Hka River on an ‘Indian file’ bamboo bridge...behind Japanese lines in Burma...’; a closeup of a young soldier; the boarding of local ships in India; fine closeup of merchandise at a local market; fishermen with their boats and net setups; portrait view of a river boat captain; and two color images showing the Exhibit on Gen. Stilwell & Americans in Chongqing During World War II. Finally there is an original press photo from the exhibit, a group photo of the branch exhibit president, chairmen, treasurers, etc. Very good condition.
