Description
An exceptionally rare World War II relic, an identification tag for an SS service dog, 1 in. dia., stamped with the SS runes, further marked ‘HeeresHeeresdiensthund’ (‘Army Service Dog’). The reverse is stamped with the number ‘126’. These tags were also used by the Wehrmacht, so this example was likely adapted for SS use. The SS used dogs not only on the front lines but also in concentration camps for surveillance and as a method of control over the prisoners. Accompanying this lot are two G.I. photos, 1965 prints of the originals, depicting the Gardelegen massacre on April 13, 1945 in which over 1,000 slave laborers were moved into a large barn and burned to death. Versions of this type of identification tag vary and it is therefore near impossible to authenticate. Sold as is.
