This very scarce separately issued wall map depicts Boston and the surrounding area on a scale of 1:39600. Remarkably detailed. Entire map surrounded by a decorative border. At upper center are vignettes of Faneuil Hall and the State House in Boston. In excellent condition for a wall map of this period, and very seldom seen. Only one example is listed for sale in the 28 years of “Antique Map Price Record.” “Map of the Vicinity and City of Boston, Massachusetts” published 1852 by J. B. Shields from Original Surveys by J. C. Sidney. This very accurate map shows greater Boston from Dover in the southwest to part of Concord, to Danvers in the northeast and Hingham in the southeast. Includes all of Brookline, Newton and Waltham, and much of Weston and Needham. The names of numerous families and landholders are shown throughout the areas outside of the city. Only significant fault is a small water stain at extreme upper right corner margin (does not go into map image). Very small, light stain just to the right of center medallion. Occasional vertical creasing to varnish. Map partly detached from bottom rod about 12.” Wall maps of this era are rarely seen with their varnish intact and nearly free of blemishes. 39 x 37.75 image area; 44 x 47 outside dimensions with rollers.
