Description: 3 gelatin silver photographs. With blindstamp "'Swadley,' 'San Francisco.'" in right lower margin. Each approx. 20.5x27 cm (8x10½") plus margins.Uncommon original photographs of the groundbreaking ceremonies of the elaborate and extensive Japanese Pavilion at the legendary Panama Pacific International Exposition which opened in San Francisco in 1915. The are numerous dignitaries and officials in attendance, from Japan and the U.S., including longtime San Francisco mayor (and future governor of California) James "Sunny Jim" Rolph, Jr. Japan's was the first foreign pavilion on the Avenue of Nations, spanning 3 acres, with two tea houses and expansive gardens. The garden was decorated with running streams, rocky outcrops, pagodas, lanterns and Buddha statues.
