Description: 168 + [1] ad pp. With 10 lithographed plates, 8 of which are colored including frontispiece; 1 folding steel-engraved panoramic plate; 7 wood-engraved plates and 2 folding maps. 21.5x13.5 cm (8½x5¼"), original pebbled black cloth, stamped in gilt, First Edition.One of the best early surveys on the natural resources of California, with much on the mining industry. In addition, there is a short (pp. 119-120) discussion of Yosemite Valley, with duotone lithograph views of Yosemite ("The Yo-Hamite Falls" and "The Yo-Hamite Valley") and two wood-engraved depictions of Big Trees in the Calaveras Grove. Currey and Kruska state that "these...appear to be the first views of Yosemite Valley published in a book." Currey & Kruska 296. Cowan p. 577; Greenwood p. 493; Howes S310; Rocq 17136. Booksticker on rear endpaper.
Condition
Slight rubbing to cloth; marginal staining and foxing, minor stub tears to maps, two folds repaired on verso with tape; very good.
