Description

Title: Antique Tibetan Copper Mandala Plaque

Size: 14 1/8” tall x 11 5/8” wide.

Description:An authentic (non-tourist) copper relief panel with a complex design that served as a Tibetan calendar, that has been blackened by the smoke from yak butter lamps traditionally used in Tibetan homes. It probably dates to the nineteenth or early twentieth century.

The plaque has richly rendered repousse decoration and chased details of three Bodhisattvas atop a central zodiacal medallion flanked by Apsaras and supported by two large lotus roundels - one with trigrams and the other a lotus blossom with rich, impressed Sanskrit. Other decoration throughout including large, stylized Sanskrit, small Sanskrit labeled figures and narrating devices, and the whole, with various tantric symbols. The mandala depiction itself surrounded by a beaded edge and the top pierced for hanging. Along the bottom is a cartouche with a long inscription.

A Mandala is literally “circle” and is a spiritual and ritual symbol in the Indian religions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It signifies the universe. “Mandala” may be any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically- a time microcosm of the universe. The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle.

14 1/8” tall x 11 5/8” wide. Weighs 14.6 oz (410 g)

CONDITION

The panel is somewhat worn from regular cleaning. Nevertheless, it still has a dark patina from the smoke from yak butter lamps. The patina on several of the raised areas is worn, revealing the copper underneath. The back side was protected from the smoke and the copper is visible. There are several areas of verdigris on both sides.
