Description
Mambila Head Mask, Cameroon. Wood and Woven Raffia. This mask is in the form of an abstracted dog/bovine animal featuring a wide open mouth, upward pointing ears, eyes projecting forward, and backward facing horns. A basket is attached underneath. "G V(?)" is written in white on the underside. Measures approximately 17" x 15" x 20" (without base) and 54" tall on custom base. Some scrapes and abrasions to the mask's surface. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
