Item Details
Description
An unrecorded colonial Edenton, North Carolina document. Folio. A printed document meant to be completed in manuscript, being a legal document related to the collection of monies by the British government. While the present form has not been completed in manuscript, on the rear is written "Exons returned Sept. Court 1775." This would date this document to just before the declaration of independence in 1776. North Carolina was the first state to direct its delegates to vote for independence during the Continental Congress. ESTC locates no document printed in Edenton prior to 1787. Edenton made its mark on the revolutionary landscape with the Edenton Tea Party in 1774, which was one of the earliest political actions organized by women in what would become the United States.
