Description
Mexia, Pedro. SILVA DE VARIA LECION AGORA NUEUAMENTE ENMENDADA…. Imprimiose en Leon de Francia: por los herederos de Iacobo de Iunta, 1556. 6.5" x 4.25". [30], [2, blank], 666, [5], [1, blank] pp. Attractively bound (ca. 20th century) using early vellum, with endpapers renewed; spine attractively lettered in manuscript. ************** Mexia's "Silva" was a popular collection of tales which first appeared in 1540. Inspiring many early dramatists, the influence of this work is well-chronicled in scholarly literature; it is even believed that Shakespeare may have borrowed scenes from this work.
Condition
Title with expert repair of chip to front margin, a few leaves with very short (1/4") closed marginal tears. Aside from the title, the remainder is rather clean with only a few very small faded stains. Early faded ink to title and one text leaf. We believe this copy was restored in an archival manner and probably washed (but very delicately, if so.) An attractive book.
