The fourth volume contains the first printings of Shakespeare’s “Rape of Lucrece,” and “Venus and Adonis” since the 1640 edition of Shakespeare’s Poems. This is the most important poetical miscellany of the era, full of amorous poems, political satire, and literary sparring.Provenance: With a small eighteenth century inscription on the title-page of Vol. I: “C&P 4r Tom. N/h J. Mollierini ex Bib: Phil: Sydenham Baronettus”, a later bookplate of W. Borlase, and some penciled notes on a front flyleaf signed “E.Q.” (Eric Quayle, author of The Collector’s Book of Books, etc.) There are no marks in this copy other than Joseph Mollierini’s statement which show the Sir Philip Sydenham provenance, but of course this set was rebound after Mollierini’s library was sold (at auction, by Samuel Paterson) in 1761.
