South Asia, India, Jain culture, ca. 16th century CE. A hand-carved stone idol of Ambika (or Ambika Devi), the mother-goddess and protector of the 22nd Tirthankara. The poignant goddess presents with 4 arms, each holding a religious implement or weapon, and bearing remains of red and black pigment across her arms, body, and face; ample pigment is visible along the verso and illustrates how her clothing appeared at one time. At her feet is a pair of zoomorphic creatures, perhaps dogs. Size: 2.25" L x 8.5" W x 17" H (5.7 cm x 21.6 cm x 43.2 cm)
